Yes, safe position worked.
Since I posted, I went and replaced the trigger with one I cut myself from a jig. I also replaced the trigger and hammer springs and the disconnector. It is now function checking properly, but I haven't been able to test fire it yet. There was some wear at the outside base of the disconnector arch, if I'm describing that correctly. It almost looked like the hammer was striking it. The trigger spring was also oddly bent outwards, like "bowlegged" so I replaced that, but I have no idea if that would have contributed to the problem.
