Couple of Questions on the Stock Version 1.9

Printed the stock in Sunlu PLA+ 2.0 and it turned out great. Questions:

I'm assuming that 1.9 is the latest design version because it was released in 2023. Is this correct?
Why are there holes on the side? They look like remnants of Gen version 2 but the side holes are not present in Gen 3. Is there another version coming out with the side holes removed?
Any concerns in printing the stock in PETG?

The holes are present in the Adapter on Gen 3, instead of in the Butt. They are QD Sling mounts.

I don't see an issue with a PETG stock, but also have never used the material.

The holes may be filled in a slicer with filler objects or in cad if you desire.

Hi Undeadchew and all,
Even with the enforcers, I'm not sure I would trust PLA to hold a QD sling mount for any significant amount of time. Especially for over the shoulder carrying. My expectation is that eventually the PLA would weaken and the QD mount would pop out.

Anyone have long term experience with using QD mounts in the stocks?

Yes, those are QD sling mounts. Never actually had one fail. In fact, I once had a china made swivel fail in the plastic mount, but mount was fine.

New stocks I moved the mounts rearward, was a mistake. Need to move them back forward where its more balanced.

I have a question too. I watched Tim's SL-308 V3.9 Assembly video and opened the .stl files for the lower and all the 1.9 stock parts in netfabb to line them all up. It looks like the 1.9 stock is compatible with the V3.9 lower except the adapter part does not blend with the SL-308 V3.9 lower. Is that correct? The Magpul stock in the video doesn't blend either 😉 so I think I'd like to go with the Hoffman Tactical V1.9 Stock System!

BTW, this will be for an upper in a 7mm-300 RCM chambering. KAK has done a lot of work with AR10 platform short magnums and, years ago, I looked into it myself and decided that the Ruger Compact Magnum would be a better choice than the WSM or RSAUM in this application. I still have unused chamber and loading die reamers but, due to aging and cognitive decline over the years, I can't remember why I came to the conclusion that RCM is best. At least I remembered where I stored the reamers, stripped upper, BCG and barrel extension!

So are there any downsides with using a V1.8 stock instead of V1.9 for my SL-308 V3.9 build? From Tim's post above, it seems it's also worth using V1.8 for its superior QD sling balance point, though I could probably move the sling mounts in the .STEP files using Alibre (usually not as easy as natively editing Solidworks files but cheaper).

whoisjohngalt I don't think there are any downsides, V1.8 gen 3 looks like it will work with SL-308.

Let me know if you have printed any of the remixes, I would like feedback from others. I'm also open to suggestions for new projects/requests. Like I know I need to fix the screw length in the readme for SL-15 Bufferless should be .5in length, there is a misalignment error on some of the grip textures that I wasn't sure was going to show up in printing until using a better printer. SL-9 Bufferless needs a TPU pad variant, and to be Ambi! (Right side Bolt hold open)

Here is a pic of old and new SL308 new is slightly slimmer but it looks close enough to still fit the adapter as shown in the previous pic.

I also have a few that are finished but not released yet due to needing to be tested more, like the bufferless orca, and hbpdw sl308.

I recently modeled a TMP style TP9 stock/magwell (also modeled a grip), and remixed the Minotaur22 PDW frame. Parametric pic rails in orange.

Also can't forget I remixed the DeAR22 a little bit and designed a 22lr hub compatible silencer.

I also use and recommend freecad, it's free!

I have some PSA lower kits so I'll definitely report back on your remixes for them. I have a KAK upper, BCG, and magnum gas tube for my 7mm-300 RCM project so I'm planning to buy the Hoffman Tactical SL-308 kit to support Tim's activities and the standard V3.9 lower should work well with KAK.

The 1.8 stock isn't a perfect match to the V3.9 lower but it's closer than the 1.9 stock and likely easier to blend to the the V3.9 via the .step file and Alibre or FreeCAD, if desired. I use FreeCAD sometimes too but I have more experience with Alibre. FreeCAD seems to be best for converting meshes to solids, as painful as that process may typically be and I'm sure I'd find it to meet my other needs too, if I invested in the learning curve.

I'm at the biggest gunshow in N. Central Idaho for the weekend. It's a big annual event and party for several of my close friends so more later....

I need to learn Freecad... I've never done 3d modeling and am struggling learning Freecad. I am going to try Onshape for a while to see if I can learn the concepts and then transition back to Freecad, but this old brain is struggling.

pigseye FreeCad has a learning curve, but if you learn just some of the tools in the Part Design workbench and follow a workflow using those will allow you to make tons of shapes. Here's my design workflow, make a new body, make a sketch in that body, pad the sketch, sketch on additional additive (pads) or subtractive (pockets) features on existing faces, and finally chamfers or fillets faces or edges of the part.

Here's what I'm working on now, this is a reverse engineering of a lower, if anyone knows what gun it's for go ahead and leave a reply.
