I have used Smooth-On's XTC 3D to on some cosplay props I have printed to speed up smoothing and finishing them. It is definitely thicker than paint, but I'm not sure that it would be so thick that it would cause clearance issues. Seeing as it is essentially a two part epoxy, and, at least for the parts I have coated with it, it seems to add significant strength, I was curious if anyone has tried using it on a build before. If it caused any clearance issues I suspect it would be on the interior areas, the safety selector, or maybe the rear takedown pin. I have some leftover from a previous project, if no one has tried it and anyone is curious I can test it out and report back. If it has been done before and wasn't found to be useful I would rather not though.
